Red Dead Redemption is really good!

It isn't too often that I go out and buy a game the day it comes out, but Red Dead Redemption by Rockstar Games was an exception. Well, actually I was working so my wife was nice enough to go by GameStop at midnight and pick it up for me. So far I have not been disappointed by this game. I have always enjoyed computer games, but until my 53rd birthday I had never owned a gaming console. We had just purchased our first big screen high definition TV, and it just seemed like the perfect time to do so. Having also decided I wanted a Blue-Ray DVD player the Playstation 3 seemed like the perfect choice for me. Let me say I love my PS3!! Realizing I might not be the only gamer who is not a teen I figured maybe I would share my enthusiasm for video games here. Keep in mind I realize I can't topple the large popular Internet gaming websites, and I don't have the budget to go out and purchase the latest games as soon as they come out, but I do hope to give helpful information to gamers of all ages looking for something play.

Red Dead Redemption

It isn't too often that I go out and buy a game the day it comes out, but Red Dead Redemption by Rockstar Games was an exception. Well, actually I was working so my wife was nice enough to go by GameStop at midnight and pick it up for me. So far I have not been disappointed by this game. Red Dead Redemption is a sandbox-style action-adventure western video game with role-playing elements developed by Rockstar San Diego, published by Rockstar Games and released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2010. It is a spiritual successor to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, but it is a much better game. Rockstar hit the nail on the head with Red Dead Redemption.

The game is set in the fictional American Old West territory and follows John Marston, a former outlaw, while he tries to free his wife and son, taken by government agents, by capturing and killing his former gang members. Read more...

Headphone choices for the Older Gamer

By Jim Hicks

My consoles are in the basement, in sort of a low-tech mancave, and it would take a bit of volume to bother anyone else in the house. Since I am Aged, and there are others in the home, often I can't really use my surround sound system to full effect. In my mind at least, it makes a difference if, in the midst of a game, I think I can hear someone sneaking up behind me.

I liked the spacial awareness I got from my very first surround sound headphones. Though they didn't have a microphone, I wasn't playing online at that point. Read more...

Tekken 6 for PSP Review

By Jim Hicks

I'm not a huge fighter game guy. I get the combo thing, loved the entire Ninja Gaiden series, but I never had played the Mortal Combat/ Street Fighter ilk. I got Tekken 5 based on ratings, and enjoyed it enormously. Truth is, it is more fun on the PSP than it is on the PS3. The PSP is the perfect console for Tekken, since you really only need the D-pad and face buttons to play. Read more...

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Review

By Gary Burzell

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune puts the gamer into the shoes of Nathan Drake who is treasure hunter on a quest for a really big Spanish treasure. Uncharted completely immerses you in its experience, and for the most part makes the gamer feel like they are a character in a really good action movie. You have to take on pirates, scales ancient walls, swing from jungle vines and solve puzzles on your path to unearthing the secrets of Nate's ancestor Sir Francis Drake. Playing alongside you during the game is the feisty newswoman Elena, and Nate's cigar-chomping buddy Sullie. Read more of Gary Burzell's review of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune ...

Uncharted 2 Review

By Paul Everitt

Uncharted 2 sees you once again take control of Nathan Drake who is lured into seeking out another lost artefact by an old friend. Nothing though is as it seems. The story sees you trek all over the globe to destinations like Nepal and the Himalayas. Just like the original, the game sees a combination of platforming, puzzle solving and third person combat mixing together for the adventure of a life time. The joy and dismay of online gaming

By Jim Hicks

In my blog over at AgedGamer (www.agedgamer.com), I've explored just a bit of the anarchy that is found in online gaming. I am admittedly pretty new to the experience, probably due to some trauma inflicted by a prepubescent who kicked my butt in Unreal Tournament when I tried that on the PC a few years back.

Assassins Creed 2 Review

By Paul Everitt

Assassins Creed erupted onto the gaming market to both hype and disappointment. Gamers were split down the middle, like Marmite you either loved it or hated it. One of the most original elements of the original game the free running was received very enthusiastically; the story was also developed well although it left many answers to questions, unanswered. Call of Duty Classic

Call of Duty: Classic Available this Week on Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network

The original title in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Classic, is available as an individual purchase on the Xbox LIVE online entertainment network and on the PlayStation Network. Finally Call of Duty fans can experience the original installment on next-generation consoles.

I played this game on my PC when it came out, and I have to admit it was one great game. I am really glad to finally be playing this game on my PS3.

Created by Infinity Ward in 2003, the original Call of Duty launched the hit franchise with more than 80 Game of the Year awards and 50 Editors' Choice honors. Ported to Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network by Aspyr, Call of Duty: Classic is rated "T" (Teen) by the ESRB for Blood & Violence.

Speaking of Call of Duty, I rushed out the day the original Call of Duty for the PC was released. Actually it was my wife who saw a TV commercial for it and told me she thought I might enjoy it since I have always had an interest in WWII history. I was hooked on that game the minute I started playing. When I purchased my Playstation 3 I was disappointed to find out it wasn't available for my PS3. Of course Call of Duty 3 icon, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: World at War icon were available, and they were some of the first games I purchased. Read more here ...

Resident Evil 5 Review

Like us old folks, all games are not new ...

I have to wonder where the issue of selling used video games will go in the next few years. I purchased Call of Duty 3 icon used from GameStop and got many hours of fun for a fraction of the new cost. While publishers don't make money off the sale of a used title, playing Call of Duty made me want to go out and purchase one of the latest Call of Duty titles, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I may not have if I didn't enjoy COD 3 as much as I did.

A New Battle Over Used Video Games

The Old Man's Top 5

# 1: ★★★★★

Red Dead Redemption is an open-world, third-person, action-adventure game set at the tail end of the American West West era. Action takes place in the first few years of the twentieth century and revolves around the choices that the protagonist, former outlaw John Marston, is forced to make due to his blemished past.

# 2: ★★★★★

Follow-up game to 2007's critically acclaimed Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the PlayStation 3 exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a continuation of the adventures of Nathan Drake, a fortune-hunter with a shady reputation and an even shadier past. Chock full of all the action, adventure, cinematic story elements and beautiful graphics that set the first game apart, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves adds deep online multiplayer options, including co-op and competitive campaigns, and a whole new supporting cast of characters.

# 3: ★★★★★

Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person tactical shooter and the sixth entry in the popular Call of Duty series. True to its name and following the lead of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it places players in modern combat settings, as opposed to the WWII environments of the earlier Call of Duty games. This modern approach brings with it new weapons, action and options. Coupled with a variety of gameplay modes including single player, multiplayer and the co-op Special Ops Mode, it is destined to be one of the most popular games of 2009 and a worthy addition to the Call of Duty series.

# 4: ★★★★★

Get ready to plunge into the lush and deadly world of the Italian Renaissance, an era of arts, riches and murderous conspiracy. Assassin's Creed II introduces you to Ezio, a new assassin carrying on the deadly lineage of his forebears. Confront an epic tale of power and corruption as you hone your assassin's art, wielding weapons and instruments designed by the legendary Leonardo da Vinci himself in this gripping and deadly sequel.

# 5: ★★★★★

The third game in the Fallout series, Fallout 3 is a singleplayer action role-playing game (RPG) set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War era theory of mutually assured destruction gone terribly wrong, with the kitschy naivety of American 1950s nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will satisfy both players familiar with the popular first two games in its series as well as those coming to the franchise for the first time.
